The patron saint of Maria SS della Bruna, takes place on 2 July every year in Matera. The festival was established by Pope Urban VI in the year 1380, former Bishop of the city of Matera. The celebrations begin at dawn with the shepherds' procession: a large group of young people accompanies the painting of the Madonna through the main streets of the city, followed by explosions of firecrackers and fireworks along the entire route. After the celebration of the Holy Mass in the Cathedral, the eighteenth-century statue of the Madonna is accompanied to the church of Piccianello (new district of the city), escorted by the costumed cavalcade. In the afternoon she will be hoisted onto the throne of a large papier-mâché chariot. The artifact is created every year by a local artist who decorates it with angels, saints and decorations of all kinds, making the float more original than expected every year. After having traveled through the main streets of the city, the cart reaches the Piazza del Duomo. After completing the usual three laps and leaving the statue in the Cathedral, the chariot sets off again towards the center where it will be destroyed within a few moments by a large crowd who will try in every way to grab a piece: a statue, a decoration, a fragment. It will bring good luck for a whole year. To conclude the celebrations, fireworks will light up the Sassi houses and the Murgia caves.
